The island of Tenerife is situated in the Atlantic ocean about 200 miles off the West African coast. At just over 2000 square kilometres it is the largest of the seven main Canary Islands. Although small in size it has as many different climatic zones as a continent, see the virtual tours on www.sun4free.com which gives you an idea of the different types of the Tenerife landscape available at very small distances apart. Tenerife is also called the "Island of Eternal Spring" which relates to its year-round moderately warm climate, which makes it an ideal place to spend the holiday. The most important part of the island is of course Mount Teide, its sheer size and height dominates the landscape for miles around. Mention was made of "El Teide" and its snow mantled, fiery cone by Christopher Columbus as well as many other early explorers of Tenerife. Some experts claim that even as recently as Columbus's time, Teide was much higher and that since he first passed it the mountain has imploded and lost a lot of its height. At three thousand seven hundred and eighteen meters it's still an impressive sight and features in the repertoire of any Tenerife guide giving information about Tenerife. If you holiday in the green North West region and should you encounter weather not to your liking it is only a short drive through the mountains and you are in blazing sunshine ready to hit the beaches.

Eating Out
Local fish - Vieja and Sama. Carnes Asados - charcoal-grilled meats and Pollo Asado - charcoal-grilled chicken. Potaje - a thick potato soup with meat and lentils. Mojo Picon - a hot, spicy sauce served with grilled meat. Conejo (rabbit), a regular item on the menu of Canary restaurants, a must try.

Fiestas
Love of fiestas is an essential part of the make-up of the Canary Islanders and the fiesta of fiestas is Tenerife Carnival. Held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife every February or March, it's the world's third largest carnival after Rio and London's Notting Hill Carnival. Throughout the year there are village fiestas all over the island.
